An Evening at the Tabard Inn (Members Only)

This is a DCPL Members-only event. Note that you need to be signed in to your Neon account in order to successfully register as a member.

DCPL Members are invited to join us at the Tabard Inn on Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30 pm for a presentation led by Alyssa Stein, Senior Project Manager with EHT Traceries, Inc., on the history of this Washington institution. A reception will follow the program.

Note on Accessibility: This program will be held on the second floor which is only accessible by roughly 16 stairs. There is no elevator, so please consider this if you have difficulties with stairs. The program will be recorded, and the video will be made available to members by request.

COVID Information: This is a limited capacity event. Masks will not be required in the program or reception space. However, if you are feeling ill on the day of the event, we ask that you stay home.

About the Tabard Inn:

The Tabard Inn was established at 1739 N Street in 1922 by entrepreneur Marie Willoughby Rogers, the widow of a prominent geologist with the US Geological Survey. She had initially intended to operate the townhouse as a guest house and party space. However, within months of its opening, she had introduced a tearoom, and the guest house was operating more formally as an inn. In 1928 and 1937, Rogers expanded the business into the adjacent houses at 1741 N Street and 1737 N Street, respectively, connecting the three internally.  Rogers oversaw operations until her death in 1970.

After Rogers’ death, the buildings were threatened with demolition. In 1974, Fritzi and Edward Cohen purchased the buildings and re-opened the Inn and restaurant. Still operating today under the ownership of Mrs. Cohen and her employees, the Tabard Inn is a survivor, distinguished as the oldest Inn in the city to be continuously owned and operated by women.
